Policy and Poetry: The African American Religious Imagination and Social Transformation
2018 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Religion
November 18
Denver, Colorado
African American religion has played an invaluable role in shaping public policy debates in the United States and abroad. A sobering truth, however, emerging from many social justice movements is that legislation cannot combat all dimensions of inequality and prejudice. Many manifestations of inequality and prejudice remain locked behind the steel doors of the most gated house-the human heart. Those doors are often pried open slowly by another persuasive dimension of African American religion-“poetry.” By poetry, we mean various aspirational, symbolic, and artistic expressions not limited by the sometimes...

According to some beliefs, 124,000 prophets were sent to the Middle East, yet the region remains one of the most troubled areas in the world. This raises questions about the divine intentions behind such actions. In contrast, my understanding of God is that He is perfect, having no need to send messengers, and His creation reflects that perfection.

So if you didn't know the panelists are all supporters of Islamic Barbaric Republic of Mullahs in Iran. The freedom fighters of Iran are exposing them one by one. For example the so called Dr. Soroush has deleted his twitter account! For decades these (I don't know what to call them) have been trying to give you and the world a false picture of the mafia mullahs in Iran. How did they do it? by stealing and spending our (Iranian people) money and giving freely to universities all over the world especially the western countries and buying professorships in any unethical university that would take the money. These universities go as high as Harvard! Please follow people of Iran's struggle for freedom and go to these people's social media and expose them!

Having spent nearly 40 years in the evangelical world myself along with a seminary degree from one of those southern evangelical seminaries and having lived in the south for 45 years I am not sure this presentation could be any more harmful to our black brothers and sisters as well as out white brothers and sisters. He speaks with a sledge hammer towards an entire race rather than the ever needed scalpel. This speech with the exception of the part of Donald Trump could have been given in 1959 without hardly any adjustments. 60 years later and he speaks with bludgeoning words as if the self correcting nature of our systems have not taken full effect. What a shame this academic has fanned the flames of hatred and division further.

There is an awful lot of arrogance and ignorance in these people, with a strange twist of juvenille bitterness and unfounded cockiness. Non the less, what I am gathering from these people and others like them is that the concept of religion was a recent invention, and that In the mind of Jesus or the Apostles, there was no such thing. Jesus always taught the Kingdom of God. never the religion of God. The concept is foreign to scripture. Maybe the Church needs to dump the concept all together and be what Jesus called them to be.

If the church can evolve from sacramental celibacy to married clergy to queer (married) clergy--can it also evolve to polygamous clergy, or polyamorous clergy. Honest question...

The preassumptions taken here are. 1. Everything in the natural world is natural. 2. Occam's razor (the explanation with the least assumtions has preference, as is it easiest to falsify). The first one separates the physical from the metaphysical. Although he gives a vague explanation about why our souls are not metaphysical. However, this preassumption denies the existance of angles executing Allah's command on earth (such as the battles fought by the prophet and Laylatu al Qadr). Moreover, the existence of jinn, possession by jinns and black magic is denied. So the first preassumtion is neither empirical (because of his point about our souls) nor in line with the Qur'an. The second one is not an irrefutable principle, rather a stance philosophers and researchers take to simplify our (thought)experiments. Occam's rasor is principle that prefers explanations with the least number of assumptions (usually the simplest explanation), in order to be able to falsify an explanation or theory. This principle doesn't provide the truth, but working models of reality which we can understand. In order for this proposition to provide truths, we must assume that reality cannot be more complex that our minds can understand. As a believer in God, you cannot take these preassumptions.
